Meet The Team
KAREN RUTHERFOORD // Yoda
As a child, Karen could be found happily prancing around in her ballet teacher’s tutus, and her love of dance, movement and expression to music has taken her down many exciting paths and around the world.
She first learned Salsa and Merengue in Mexico, and on returning to Australia was chosen from a group of 20 experienced dancers to undertake further teacher training in Ballroom and Latin for a prominent studio. She worked for them for 7.5 years, going on to become their top instructor across Australia, and moving from Brisbane to Canberra to manage one of their studios.
Karen took a break to study and practice Remedial and Eastern Massage, which inadvertently changed her outlook on dance completely, grounding all her understanding of movement in biomechanics and energy, and setting her on a path to become one of the most comprehensive analysts of partner dancing in Australia.
In 2007 she started building Kmotion as we know it today, initially running classes in her private studio, hiring halls and ultimately leasing the first commercial premises at London Circuit. As well as a focus on detailed, knowledgeable instruction, Karen has always committed to furthering the social side of dancing, creating some of Canberra’s longest running Socials like Thursday Latin Nights (continuous since 2008), and Sunday Zouk Nights (since 2010).
Highlights
Karen first started travelling to Argentina in 2004 with a desire to learn Tango from the source, and has since made it an almost annual pilgrimage, continuing her training but also now running Tango Tours to help others experience the Buenos Aires that she knows and loves.
She first experienced Zouk Lambada at the Sydney Salsa Congress in a workshop with Kadu and Larissa in 2008, and immediately knew she had to bring it back to Canberra! This began a process of travelling to Brisbane, Argentina and Brazil for further training, and introducing the first regular classes in Canberra, at a time when everyone wanted Salsa and Bachata!
Early on, Karen recognized a gap in the availability of top level instruction in Canberra, and set about bringing Australian and International artists to run workshops and share their knowledge.
Nestor & Katrina, Rodrigo & Agustina, Jaime Jesus, Juan & Josie, Moro, Bebe and Romina, Adilio Porto, Carlos da Silva, Arthur & Layssa, Bruno and many more.
JODIE WONG // Bachata, Kizomba
Jodie is one of our awesome Bachata Instructors!
She has been dancing (religiously) since April 2016, and says Bachata has taken over her life!
“The music, the dance, it’s become my passion and I’m addicted to Bachata! I love how dance has given me greater confidence and can make me forget about any worries that I’ve had that day. It is an amazing feeling to be able to teach students what I know about Bachata and see the smiles on their faces at the end of every class.”
“I came to KMOTION Dance Studio because they’ve got a great culture here and it’s just a fun place to learn dancing and to dance at.”
When not dancing, Jodie loves chilling out with friends over good food, good chats and fun times.
Come and dance with Jodie and see what Bachata is all about!
JAMIE COTTRELL // Bachata
Jamie started Latin dancing over 6 years ago, and says “I mainly started just as a way of meeting new people in Canberra and branching out socially. I was never a very socially outgoing person, and Latin dance has given me the opportunity to meet new people that I would never have met otherwise”.
He’s extremely passionate about his Bachata, spending years training in Sydney with Juan Ruiz at Tropical Soul, as well as travelling overseas to further his knowledge and experience.
“My most memorable dance event for me to date has to be going to Cadiz in Spain last year for Sensual Week. This was an opportunity to dance with and learn from the creators of Bachata Sensual, Korke and Judith. The week was amazing, getting to meet people from all over the world who were all just as passionate about the style of Bachata Sensual”
Jamie is one of our senior Bachata Instructors, and says “I enjoy teaching dance because I get inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the students that are all excited to keep improving and learning” – come along on Tuesdays and experience his teaching for yourself!
When not dancing Jamie can be found playing board games with friends.
DAVE // Salsa
RAKESH TADISINA // Kizomba
BARNES FULHAM // Zouk
ADAM BARRIE // Salsa, Rueda, Bachata
Adam is one of Canberra’s most experienced instructors, and is renowned for bringing fun and high energy to his classes. He began learning Rueda in 2000 and has been fortunate to train with the best instructors in the world including Airagdin Pavon More, known as “El Moro”, Eric Turro, Adrian Medina, Israel, Alex Espinoza, and many other local instructors.
He loves Rueda because “It’s technically and physically demanding, and great training for social dancing with just one person, as the forms in Rueda are immediately usable in partner dancing. But whatever it is, the ultimate goal is fun!”
He ran his own school for many years, and later agreed to join Kmotion to teach Salsa, Rueda and Bachata.
GLENN MOTUM // Tango
Glenn started Tango in 2011 and teaches Argentine Tango.
“Kmotion is an awesome fun, friendly environment and Karen is amazing!
I enjoy teaching Tango because seeing people tune in to the art of connection and start to the communicate in the embrace is really cool!
When I’m not dancing Tango I’m doing everything motorbikes…”
DANICA (Dee) ELLICOTT // Zouk
She didn’t know it at the time, but Danica’s life changed when she started dancing in 2015. Initially dragged along to Latin Lovers by a friend to dance Salsa, it didn’t take long before the music and dynamic connectedness of Zouk caught her attention.
Testament to her passion, Danica has since initiated her own dance wear company and blog, www.heels-travel-zouk.com, to help inspire and grow the global Zouk community.
Having performed in a number of professional choreographies such as Kadu and Larissa’s Advanced Zouk Team Canberra, Arthur and Layssa’s Canberra choreography and Eglantine’s Ladies Zouk Shines among others at Territory and international Zouk and Latin dance events, Danica has a diverse range, style and confidence she imparts to her students. Coupled with twelve years of leadership and management training, Danica is known for her passion and effective teaching style that is tailored to each student.
Danica describes a stand-out moment in her dance journey to be a course on connection run by Xandy Liberato at the 2017 Prague Zouk Congress. It was this watershed moment that her understanding of Zouk was taken to another level and her passion to share the beauty of the dance was ignited. Ever since, Danica has made it her mission to travel the world to dance Zouk, and share her experiences with others. Having danced in Prague, Czech Republic and Hawaii, USA already, the coming year will see Danica dance in Thailand and Malaysia as well as further around Australia.
Danica believes that the world would be a better place if everyone danced, as it is through dance that we can connect and grow as people. To this end, she has made it her personal goal to grow the Canberra Zouk community, as the bigger it is, the better everyone will all be as dancers, and the better our part of the world will be.
Danica started instructing at Kmotion in early 2017, and loves watching her ‘Zouklings’ grow into confident, happy and considerate dancers. Danica describes teaching Zouk at Kmotion as an honour as she gets to be involved at the initial stage of people’s dance journeys. Danica exudes a genuine passion for dance and looks forward to helping others discover their confidence and unlock their potential through connection and Zouk.
ROD HARRIS // Zouk
Rod was first introduced to Latin dance in 2013 when he was looking for a new activity to keep his mind and body active.
While in his first term of salsa they were introduced to social dancing nights. During the night he saw his first Zouk-Lambada dance and was instantly in love with its graceful flowing movements set to modern music. Before the song had even finished he had enrolled in the next term’s Zouk-Lambada beginner class!
Since then he has been to several interstate and international congresses, competed twice in the Australian Latin Dance Championships and begun teaching Zouk-Lambada classes at Kmotion.
As an instructor, his goals are to give students the skills and confidence to participate in Latin dance social nights and festivals as he believes it’s a great way to keep active and meet interesting people from all over the world.
XARJIE ZHOU // Zouk
Xarjie began his dance training in Ceroc (aka. Modern Jive) in 2002 for about 2 years, and then took a break from dancing as he pursued his Physiotherapy studies. In late 2009 he discovered his passion for Zouk Lambada (aka Brasilian Zouk) at Kmotion Dance Studio. Since then he has trained in Brasilian Zouk extensively both locally, and internationally.
For the love of Brasilian Zouk, Xarjie has travelled internationally to countries such as Brazil, Russia, Poland, Netherlands, and Czech Republic. In Australia, he has choreographed, performed and competed in events such as Casa do Zouk, Brazil Central, Sydney International Zouk Festival, Sydney Latin Dance Festival, and Australian Latin Dance Championships.
Xarjie has also been taught by an extensive list of international dancer artists such as Kadu & Larissa, Bruno & Eglantine, Alex & Matilhde, Xandy & Evelyn, Bebe & Rachel, Solange Dias, Adilio Porto, Renata Pecanha, Renato Veronezzi, and Dadinho Jefferson to name a few.
Currently, Xarjie is Brazilian Zouk instructor at Kmotion Dance Studio. He also has interests in other dance styles such as Argentine Tango and Kizomba. His Physiotherapy background has allowed Xarjie to integrate his teaching and learning from a holistic, scientific and biomedical approach. Recently, he has furthered his studies in dance injury management and prevention through health professional courses in “Dance teacher & health professional training workshop – level 1” Jan 2017, and “Foot and ankle in dance” July 2017.
Xarjie’s philosophy is that dance is a form of artistic self-expression through a sequence of precise movement enhanced by music. Partner dancing is then a form of non-verbal communication between 2 or more people through self-expression – like a civilised conversation without words. With this analogy in mind, a partner-dance should be interactive and eloquent. His goal as a teacher is to help facilitate students to become independent thinkers, to maximise each student’s potential as a dancer, to customise teachings to suit individuals’ needs, and to promote social connection between students.
ASHVINI (Ash) MUNINDRADASA // Salsa, Bridal
Ash started dancing at the age of 9 with ballet, which she trained in, in different parts of the world and then starting teaching at age 16. When she moved to Australia as a young adult, she was disappointed that she couldn’t commit as much time to ballet as she wanted.
There was an awkward period where she tried different styles of dance in an attempt to find a substitute for ballet- hip hop, breakdancing, bush dancing, cheerleading (!), ballroom and Latin.
She found that ballroom and Latin were the styles of dance that offered the most satisfaction and technical challenge. Having also grown up listening to Latin music and having spent some time in high school learning Spanish, Latin allowed her to combine her love for movement, Latin music and Spanish into one neat package. She met Karen in 2009 not long after and the rest, as they say, is history.
Goals/ Aspirations: When I grow up I would like to be the kind of person that can dance a Latin dance socially (and competently) in any part of the world and enjoy it.
Favourite dance style: The dance you do when you’re all alone and a good tune comes on on the radio.
I came to Kmotion… by accident really (I was looking for a job) but ended up staying for the people and the sense of community. The high standard of teaching didn’t hurt either.
When I’m not dancing… I’m probably at work, catching up on sleep, reading a book or dedicatedly making my way through my latest TV show.
